Jason McAteer, 35, became a free agent at the end of last season when his contract as player/coach with Tranmere Rovers was not renewed. The boyhood Reds fan has now decided to end his playing career.
McAteer joined Liverpool from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5 million in September 1995 and made 150 appearances in four years at the club. He also played in the 1996 FA Cup Final defeat to Manchester United before moving on to Blackburn in 1999.
